Author: P.L. Matos

This time of year we as men we often run into the usual situation of trying to plan something for Valentine’s Day. It’s especially difficult for us guys for so many reasons. First, we have exhausted our bank of ideas on Christmas. Second, there is pressure to be romantic (when inherently we are not), and lastly we do not want to duplicate bad ideas from years past.

Sure most guys wait until the last minute or even forget. Don’t believe me? Check your local gas station. There is a reason they sell roses and Valentine’s Day candy. Don’t be that guy. You don’t need to be Rico Suave but the truth is that you need to just plan a little better. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Lingerie

Caution – Check your wife’s or girlfriend’s size before you go shopping for this stuff. You don’t want to embarrass her or yourself by getting something for her that is too big or too small. There is nothing that will ruin the moment faster than to have her thinking about her weight. If you get something too big, she’ll think you see her as fat, too small and she’ll get a complex. Go for something tasteful. Make her feel sexy, not slutty. Look to spend $50 – $200. This is a win, win gift as a guy. Not only are you getting her a romantic and sexy gift, but she will want to wear it for you and you know what that means.

Candy

Sure a box of chocolates is always a nice gift. The problem is that it shouldn’t say “Russell Stover’s”. Look there is nothing wrong with the company; they make fine chocolates and have been around forever. These are the chocolates that you should get your co-workers and friends, not your lover. If you do, it screams “last minute ditch effort”. It should come from a mom and pop store, Godiva’s, Munson’s, or some other brick and mortar that strictly sells sweets. Then it shows you took the effort to pick out some quality chocolates.

Flowers

Flowers are a fantastic gift and most women love getting these especially on this particular day. Prices are steep this time of year because they’ve got you by the short ones. It’s okay, go with it. You can pull out the stops and have them sent to her job, or be a romantic and bring them home. Here’s a hint: She loves getting high quality flowers at work. It makes her look good to all the other girls and makes you look like Mr. Stud. Red Roses ONLY. Do not get those multi-colored ones it reeks cheap. Worse, do not send carnations or any other flower, unless its your mom.

Jewelry

As a last resort, this is where we can make up for almost everyone of our shortcomings and mistakes. Find out her preference and no, you don’t have to buy diamonds every year. Get her some earrings in her birthstone, or a nice pendant. It doesn’t have to cost you an arm and leg, but as you know the sky is the limit. Just remember that you have anniversaries, Christmas, and Birthdays so you may not want to blow you load on a Valentine’s Day gift.

Other

Concert, Musical, or Theater tickets (not Movie Theater). These make a fantastic gift and can be paired with a nice dinner out for the two of you.

A weekend getaway with some couple activities.

A spa gift card, for a nice massage, manicures, pedicures, haircut, etc.

Teddy Bears, yes women still love these things. Get a nice one from Vermont Teddy Bear

Pajamas – If your not into the whole lingerie thing. Some great one’s can be found at Victoria Secret or Pajamagram.com

Avoid

Appliances

Things for the kitchen unless it fits a particular theme or it’s a passion of hers

Electronics

Toys

Gadgets

Jerseys

Author: P.L. Matos

Superbowl Sunday, a day filled with euphoria for every sports fan, but every year a recipe for a miserable Monday. Superbowl Saturday sounds every bit as good and would alleviate the usual fallout experienced by poor planning. The NFL is the most progressive league of all the major sports. They have historically been proactive to combat issues ranging from affirmative action to steroids. Yet, this progressive league fails to recognize that the biggest game of the year creates a problem far bigger than a Janet Jackson clothing “malfunction”.

In a time when our economy is struggling and people are doing the best just to hang on to their jobs, employers can’t afford to deal with the economic burden placed on them due to the Superbowl. Put aside the $3 million for a 30 second spot, that is not the issue here or even the fact that employers lose approximately $850 million in the week leading up to the big game because little can be done by the league. The problem is the $150 million businesses lose as a result of the 1.5 million employees calling out sick or the over 4 million employee who show up late on the Monday after the game.

Even crazier are cities who have teams in the big game are now cancelling school the following day so kids can stay up and watch the game. What are we teaching our children? Move the game NFL and allow your fans to enjoy a Super Saturday without the consequences of a Miserable Monday.

how to change a furnace filter, how to test a furnace's airflow, what to do if a furnace doesn't ignite, and much more.

Author: Steve McCutchen

Looking for some quick tips on how to keep your gas furnace in tip-top shape this winter? The Ultimate Gas Furnace Troubleshooting Guide will answer all of your questions, including how to turn on a furnace, how to change a furnace filter, how to test a furnace’s airflow, what to do if a furnace doesn’t ignite, and much more.

We hope you find this guide to be useful — and we hope you stay warm this winter!

A) How to Turn On Your Gas Furnace

It sounds easy, but believe it or not, many people don’t know how to turn their furnace on or off. Here’s a simple, step-by-step breakdown:

* Find the breaker for your furnace. It’s part of the electrical panel, which is usually located in your basement, utility room or garage. The breaker should be clearly labeled with a gas furnace sticker. Turn the breaker to the “On” position.

* Locate and turn on the furnace switch. It is typically somewhere near the bottom of your basement stairs – sometimes in the ceiling, sometimes in the furnace room itself, and usually at eye level or slightly higher.

* Set your thermostat. Check that the furnace is on and then make sure that the selector switch is set to “Heat”. Finally, adjust your set point temperature, and that’s it – your furnace is turned and ready to heat your home!

B) How to Check and Change Your Furnace Filter

Proper maintenance of your furnace filter can help optimize airflow from your furnace, which will keep it running efficiently and economically during the coldest months of the year. To prevent burnout of your furnace parts, we recommend inspecting your filter monthly and changing it every three to six months. Here’s how it’s done:

* Begin by carefully opening the furnace’s external rack or panel door.

* Remove the furnace filter by sliding it out. Take a look at the filter to see if there’s any darkness or discoloration.

* If you can’t see through the filter, it’s definitely time for a new one. Slide the new filter into the furnace, making sure that it is installed in the direction of the airflow. And that’s it – you’re done!

C) How to Test Your Furnace’s Airflow

If a room in your house is too cold during the winter, it might be because your furnace isn’t supplying enough warm air through the registers in that particular room. There’s a simple way to test the airflow from your furnace registers to make sure they are working properly — the garbage bag airflow test.

The test is a quick way to estimate airflow by determining how long it takes to fill a common plastic garbage bag. While it is not a precise measurement, it is better than no measurement at all and will give you a good ideas as to whether you need to call a technician to look at your ductwork.

To do the garbage bag airflow test:

* Tape the mouth of the garbage bag to a coat hanger or piece of cardboard to keep it open.
* Crush the bag flat and place it over the register or exhaust hood.
* Count the number of seconds it takes for the bag to fully inflate.

If the inflation time is:

* 2 seconds = 37 L/s (75 cfm)
* 4 seconds = 20 L/s (40 cfm)
* 10 seconds = 10 L/s (20 cfm)

If the measured airflow is less than 10 L/s, the furnace is delivering only a small amount of heat to a room and needs to be further inspected to determine why the heat is not going through.

The garbage bag airflow test is also useful if you have changed your heating or cooling systems or have made major renovations to your house.

D) If Your Gas Furnace Fails to Ignite

If you can hear that your furnace is on and the fan is running, but all you’re getting is cold air, you likely have ignition failure. Try resetting your furnace by turning the switch to off for at least ten seconds, then, turning it on again. If that doesn’t do the trick, give your HVAC contractor a call.

E) Furnace Troubleshooting Checklist

Think your gas furnace has quit? You could save yourself the cost of a no-heat service call by checking the following:

* Is the furnace switch in the on position? It may have been turned off by mistake.

* Is the thermostat properly set to the “heat” position and the temperature set to your normal heat setting?

* Is the furnace venting blocked by snow or ice? If so, try to remove the blockage.

* Are the programmable thermostat batteries fresh?

* Is the circuit breaker in the electric panel in the proper position?

* Is the furnace door properly closed?

* Has the filter been changed recently?

If you’ve checked everything on the list and your furnace still isn’t working, give your local HVAC contractor a call, and they’ll get your furnace back up and running as soon as possible.

F) How to Properly Remove Vent Blockages

If you become aware of a furnace problem that might involve the exterior vent, do a quick inspection and see if any snow, ice or some common household item might be blocking the vent. If so, before removing the obstruction, head inside first and turn the off the power to your furnace. Now, you can safely clear away whatever is blocking your exterior vent. Once you’re done, turn your furnace back on using either the breaker or the switch.

A lack of airflow through the furnace’s interior vents could mean your furnace fan motor has seized. If this has happened, don’t try to fix the problem yourself – contact the expert furnace repair technicians at your local HVAC contractor.

G) How to Stop Air Leaks and Prevent Heat Loss

Air leaks account for a significant amount of a home’s heat loss in winter – resulting in increased heating costs as your furnace constantly tries to replace the warm air that has escaped from your home. Fixing these leaks will save you money on your heating bills.

To stop leaks around windows and doors:

* Remove the trims carefully.
* Fill large cracks or gaps with foam backer rod, oakum, or expanding polyurethane foam.
* Replace the trims and caulk along the edges.

To stop leaks along baseboards:

* Caulk along the seams without removing the baseboard.
* Remove the baseboard and caulk between the wall and the floor.

To stop leaks around electrical outlets on outside walls:

* Turn off power to the outlet and remove the outlet cover.
* Install a foam insulating pad.
* Replace the outlet cover turn the power back on to the outlet.

To stop leaks in an unfinished basement:

* Caulk under the basement sill plate and around the joists with a rubber–based caulking or acoustical sealant.
* Caulk any gaps where ducts enter a wall or ceiling.
* Insulate ducts with preformed wraps or duct–taped insulation batts.

To stop leaks in your attic:

* Seal any cracks.
* Weather strip your attic door and close it tightly.

H) If a Gas Smell is Detected

In the unlikely event that you smell something like a rotten egg smell, you could have a gas leak. Don’t turn on any electrical switches and open all of your windows. Then, go to a neighbor’s house and contact your HVAC contractor or your local gas provider immediately.

Hackers or other criminals can easily access your passwords and logins and use them against you or your wallet.

Author: Alex Riss

Many of us do so because it is getting hard to keep in mind so many passwords and logins and remember which one is for what account. However, it is not a secret that keeping personal information in browser not secure at all. Hackers or other criminals can easily access your passwords and logins and use them against you or your wallet.

When you use Internet intensively or on a professional basis and have to use many different accounts the only secure and reliable way to solve this passwords riddle is to use password protection software. Professional password protection software such as Handy Password, Roboform, LastPass and others allows you to avoid keeping all the passwords and logins in mind and give rich set of advanced password management features.

Password protection software has simple interface and even beginner PC user can easily use it to save time and improve password security. Program saves passwords and logins automatically when you enter them first time to access website or account. Next time when you will enter this site password manager will automatically fill in password and login for it. This is a great economy of time and you don’t have to remember all the passwords so you can use strong, unique passwords for every important account without any forget-your-password troubles.

Now let’s say several words about security. Instead of storing passwords in browser where everyone can get them without any difficulties, professional password protection software keeps passwords, logins and other personal information in strongly encrypted database protected by one master-password. For example, Handy Password use 128-bit blowfish encryption algorithm, which is also used in banking systems and is quite unbreakable. In addition, you can keep your encrypted passwords database

not only on your HDD, but also on remote email server or on USB flash card to improve passwords security in cases when it is necessary.

Between additional password manager features, it is necessary to mention bookmark manager, which is especially useful for portable USB version of password manager and allows you to have all your passwords and bookmarks always with you. It is inevitable ability to use your passwords and bookmarks in journeys, internet café or to use one password database at home and in office. Another important thing to say about is a random password generator a built-in tool to create strong random passwords with lower and upper case letters, numerals and special characters.

If you want to save a great deal of time and free your mind from countless passwords to remember, if you want to store your passwords securely without access to any third party, if you want to take advantage of simple user-friendly interface, than you can use password protection software

This concept of a retirement living community is very different from the only choice in the past, which is the nursing home

Author: Gavin Cruise

This concept of a retirement living community is very different from the only choice in the past, which is the nursing home. Thus, this concept is also known by various names including domiciliary care, residential care, personal care, community based retirement facilities, adult congregate living care, board and care, supported care, enhanced care, retirement residences, adult foster care, adult homes, and sheltered housing. However, some providers of assisted living facilities may also have independent living and nursing home facilities nearby to provide what they call a continuing care retirement community.

Sometimes the assisted living accommodations are specially geared towards the unique requirements of elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease. These are known as Alzheimer’s facilities that are designed to handle the needs of people who are suffering from the progressive loss of cognitive ability. At the start, the services required by the patient may be similar to those that are needed by other elderly people. However, as the disease progresses, the loss of cognitive ability may become so severe that the care to be provided is similar to that which is given in a nursing home. The primary benefit offered by these facilities is basically the assurance that your loved ones are safe and that all of their needs are taken care of.

It should be noted that a different kind of living arrangement is provided for the elderly who are capable of doing everything for themselves. This is known as independent living for seniors because they do not require the assistance of anybody in doing their daily activities. These retirees are simply there to enjoy their retirement and the independent living communities provide them with many opportunities to do so because of the amenities that are provided such as the exercise

rooms, patios, gardens, tennis courts, golf courses, and others. The residents live a stress-free life where they no longer have to do the usual tasks that are needed in a home, such as watering the plants, cutting the grass, repainting the walls or the roof, and others.

Some providers have arrangements whereby independent living and assisted living facilities are provided within a particular community. Nursing homes are also nearby to facilitate the transfer from one type of accommodation to another in case there is a change in the condition of a resident. For those who are planning to retire, the Internet makes it easier to compare and choose from the various services. Of course, nothing beats an actual visit to a facility but the websites of these providers often have newsletters and brochures that provide you with a good idea of the kind of life that is available in a particular community. Some of the things to look out for are the general attitude and appearance of the residents and the staff, the cleanliness of the facility, and the requirements for admission.

The increasing popularity of online flight booking has prompted airlines to include this facility on their website.

Flight Ticket Booking via Airline Website:

For passengers opting for online flight ticket booking, certain airlines offer numerous benefits that set them apart from their competitors. Look out for the following advantages when selecting an airline:

Comprehensive flight schedule: Some airlines display a wide range of scheduling options that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. You can see exactly when each flight departs and arrives at its destination and its stopovers.

Web-special deals and discounts: With online booking, airlines save on overhead. Some of the airlines pass on these savings to their passengers in the form of high discounts.

Cost savings: Some airlines display the exact cost of each leg of a flight and various options/services available onboard. This enables you to select the desired services and make the highest possible cost savings, Go Air Tickets and SpiceJet tickets are examples.

Modifications made easy: Several people encounter the need to make alterations to their travel plans and specifications, such as a change in departure date and timing, seat and food specifications, days after making a reservation

. Some airlines allow you to make modifications as late as 24 hours before the scheduled departure timing.

Facility of early check-in: Online flight ticket booking offers you the unique benefit of checking in up to 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure time. You can select your seat and print your boarding pass from the comfort of your home or office. The benefit transcends to time saved in serpentine queues at the airport

. If you have only carry-on luggage, you can directly make your way to the airplane’s gate with your boarding pass. Otherwise, you can get your bags checked at a kiosk at the airport and skip the ticketing and boarding pass lines.

Are you thinking about getting your first tattoo? So, what's the next step? It's not really advisable to rush to the nearest tattoo shop, choose a random design and get your tattoo done.

Author: Neil Jones

Are you thinking about getting your first tattoo? So, what’s the next step? It’s not really advisable to rush to the nearest tattoo shop, choose a random design and get your tattoo done.

Before you proceed, the five most vital points to consider are discussed in the following.

(i) Ask yourself if you really need a tattoo

A tattoo is not a temporary thing but a permanent impression for a lifetime. So, first of all, you must be absolutely sure to have one. At present, you may be thinking it to be the biggest thing of your life, but think about how you will feel after 10, 20, or 50 years hence.

Even though tattoo removal technology is improving these days, it is very expensive, painful, and most importantly time consuming. So when you think about a tattoo, decide to have it for a lifetime.

(ii) The design of the tattoo

When you’ve finally decided to have a tattoo, the second step is to decide upon the design you want. There are, in fact, innumerable categories of tattoo designs to choose from, such as flower, butterfly, dragon, angel, sun, etc. There are endless choices.

Most of the tattoos are done using predesigned templates. It’s absolutely up to you which design you choose and take it to your tattoo artist; there are some designs available for free and others may cost up to around 20 USD.

So make an extensive research on tattoo-related websites, look at some tattoo design books and decide on the type of design you’d like. After selecting the category, go for the actual design.

Otherwise, if you are unable to find the particular design of your choice anywhere, or you want some unique tattoo design, then you can hire a tattoo artist to design a custom tattoo solely for you.

This option will be expensive and it might cost you around 200-300 USD or more for the design, depending on size and complexity of the design. Although, most of the mainstream designs work out cheaper as majority of the tattoo artists have lot of experience to design them. But your tattoo will be unique and you will be proud to have a tattoo for the lifetime that no one else will have.

Remember that a good tattoo is never cheap, and a cheap tattoo can never be good.

And one more thing, be extra careful to choose a design which you will never be tired of looking at, unless you want to place the tattoo on a part of your body that is not easily visible, e.g. your back. The worst case is to have a new tattoo placed on a part quite visible and you start hating to see the design after a few months.

You should go for a design that never loses its relevance with respect to you as time passes. This is particularly relevant in cases when you decide to have a name as your tattoo.

Some people include the names of their children to their tattoo. This is particularly a safe option as your children’s names will remain the same throughout their life. But when you decide to have the name of your partner or spouse to your tattoo, think carefully. What will happen if you both get separated in future? If you have a new partner, will that partner be happy to see the name of your ex partner on your body?

(iii) Do you want your tattoo totally black or in color?

Whether you want your tattoo in black or in color is another important consideration. This choice again depends mostly on the type of design you choose.

But remember that black tattoos normally have more definition. Due to the contrast with your skin color, they’re more noticeable compared to color tattoos which fade with time due to smoothing effect. Comparatively color tattoos are much richer add more characters to your design, but they are also more costly.

(iv) Where do you want to place your tattoo?

Before deciding upon which part of your body you want to place the tattoo, three points should be considered. First, consider the size of the design. If you want to go for a large design, then your hands or ankles etc. won’t be perfect as there won’t be enough space. You should select back, chest, stomach, or shoulders for this purpose.

Secondly, how visible should your tattoo be? You need to consider whether you want it to be visible publicly most of the time, or you want to keep it covered. Then you have to remember your normal style of dress.

Also bear in mind that certain professions (e.g. police) do not allow any tattoos on the lower arms. So in such cases, you should first check with your employers as well.

Thirdly, some areas will be more painful to put a tattoo than others. In general, the less fleshy areas of your body, such as your head, ankles, and lower back, tend to be more painful while tattooing. The shoulders, chest, upper arm and upper back are some less painful areas of your body. And the more intimate areas of your body would be very sensitive due to the involvement of a large number of nerve endings.

(v) Size of the tattoo

The size of the tattoo will mostly be determined by the location where you want it on your body. For example, a design measuring 12 inches square cannot be fitted on the back of your hand. A large tattoo will take more time to complete, will be more noticeable, and will cost more.

But all these do not mean that a small tattoo can be done easily without much concern. A similar level of commitment is necessary for a small tattoo as a larger one.

It is a major decision to get any tattoo, so take your time to decide upon everything that are discussed above before going any further.

It can pay dividends, literally, to keep your car's tires in good shape.

Author: Gregg Hall

It can pay dividends, literally, to keep your car’s tires in good shape. If you don’t make sure that your car’s tires have the proper air pressure, are rotated regularly and in good alignment, then you harm your car’s fuel efficiency. Given the way fuel prices are, that can add up pretty quickly. So, learn what you need to do to keep your four rubber tires working their best to keep your fuel bill to a minimum, and get the added benefit of doing your part to protect the environment.

One of the easiest things related to tire maintenance to keep under control is inflation. Your tires have to have a certain amount of air pressure to work properly, and you need to check them every so often to see if they are in the proper range. Each pound of pressure that your tires are under inflated will cost you .4% of your fuel economy, so make sure that your tires are properly inflated! If you don’t know what the proper PSI of your tires are, you will be able to find one listed in your glove compartment. Also, make sure that all your tires are evenly inflated. Unevenly inflated tires will lessen fuel efficiency almost as much as under inflated tires. Make sure that you keep track of your tires’ pressure. It’s as easy as checking a gauge every now and then, so do it.

During the colder winter months, you will have to pay special heed to your tires’ pressure. That is because as the air cools, the air pressure in your tires will drop. In fact, it is one pound of pressure for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. So, during the winter, you will likely have to add a bit of air during the colder months, which in turn will help your tires cut through the slushy, snowy muck that can form them.

Keeping your tires properly rotated can also greatly improve your fuel economy. Tire rotation ensures that no one area of your tires gets excessive wear. If you are not sure of the right way to rotate your tires, check your car’s owner’s manual. You should have your tires rotated twice per year.

When you are ready for a replacement tire, make sure that you purchase the right tire for your car. Check your owner’s manual for the right size and type. Desirable characteristics for fuel efficiency include low rolling resistance, and long tire life. When you are purchasing your tires, tell the dealer that you are interested in maximizing fuel economy, and they will help you choose the right tire to do so.

Finally, make sure that your car’s tires are all correctly in alignment. This needs to be checked once every year; probably one of the times you have your tires rotated. Tires that are misaligned do not roll freely, and so will consume more fuel, shorten your tires’ lifespan, and also impede a vehicle’s handling ability.

Also remember that poorly kept tires can be a safety hazard. Racing slicks are good for a track, but not a wet road. Saving fuel money may also save your life.

Keeping your car’s tires in good repair is a sound, economical investment. You pocketbook will thank you when you are filling up. Keeping your tires in good condition may even pay for itself.

Often referred to as “The Great One,” Clemente was the first Latin American player elected to the baseball Hall of Fame.

Author: William Graham

I was unfamiliar with this guy until a friend of mine from San Juan Puerto Rico explained to me the impact this great baseball player had on the sport of baseball and the people and culture of the country of Puerto rico.

Roberto Walker Clemente was born in Barrio San Anton in Carolina, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934.

He is remembered today as one of the game’s best all-round right fielders, with one of the best arms in baseball. Often referred to as “The Great One,” Clemente was the first Latin American player elected to the baseball Hall of Fame.

Roberto Clemente’s had an impressive lifetime batting average of .317, and is one of only a few players to have collected 3,000 hits. He was a powerhouse from the outfield too, throwing out players from over 400 feet. His personal records included four National League batting championships, twelve Gold Glove awards, the National League MVP in 1966, and the World Series MVP in 1971, where he batted .414.

Tragically, Roberto Clemente’s life ended on December 31, 1972 in a plane crash while en route to Nicaragua with relief supplies for earthquake victims. Always the humanitarian, Clemente was on the plane to make sure the clothing, food and medical supplies weren’t stolen, as had happened with previous flights.

The rickety plane went down off the coast of San Juan shortly after takeoff, and Roberto’s body was never found. For his “outstanding athletic, civic, charitable, and humanitarian contributions,” Roberto Clemente was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress in 1973.
